Are We Living In a Culture of Flakes?

don't be flakey!

Six days, three reschedules, and two time-sensitive text messages that went unanswered for 14 hours. That’s what it took recently for a friend to pick up a couch he’d already agreed to buy from me. This behavior got the entire Career Contessa office talking, and our Editorial Director Kit Warchol was so enraged that she has deemed this the “culture of flakes.” 78%. That’s the percentage of millennials who say they’ve been “ghosted” at least once during their swinging single days. And 2. There are two women I know personally who accepted job offers only to have their potential employer disappear on them entirely. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the rise of flakiness in our culture first-hand. Having spent four-plus years on the online dating circuit, I’ve heard all the last-minute excuses (my favorite: a sprained wrist). And I can count on one hand the friends I have that make plans more ...see the slideshow here

How To Flower Bomb Your Friend On Her Birthday

flower bomb birthday party!

Ever heard of flower bombing someone? It’s basically when you make a room look like a flower explosion happened, using tons and tons of blooms to create a massive installation — we’re talking total flower overload. And trust us, it’s just as beautiful as it sounds! Caroline’s birthday was last week, so we teamed up with our friends at UrbanStems to plan the ultimate birthday surprise by flower bombing our studio living room. When Caroline arrived at work, she’d be greeted by all of her favorite flowers and get to take them all home at the end of the day. It was a gorgeous success, and we couldn’t resist sharing! Keep scrolling for all the photos from the celebration along with tips on how you can set off a flower bomb of your own. photography by Kristen Kilpatrick ...see the slideshow here

Molten Chocolate Cakes with Whipped Vanilla Mascarpone

molten chocolate cake

Editor’s Note: Today’s recipe comes to us from Tieghan Gerard of Half Baked Harvest. If you’re into food as much as we are, chances are that your Pinterest boards are filled with recipes from her site. Next week, we’ll be sharing a story and photos from a holiday dinner party from Tieghan’s Colorado home, but we couldn’t help but share this molten chocolate cake recipe with you guys a little early, enjoy! From Tieghan: I truly believe you’d be hard-pressed to find a better-tasting molten cake than this one. Bold statement, I know, but I feel pretty confident in these cakes. I would even go so far as to say they make life worth living. You know what’s so crazy about this recipe, though? You’d think something as amazing as this would be complicated and tricky to make. But if you follow the recipe as written, you’ll get a cake that’s soft ...read the rest of the story here

The Brow Fillers Pro Makeup Artists Swear By

All the best brow fillers!

Beauty trends seem to come and go on an almost weekly basis, but one trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere—thankfully!—is full, defined brows. After the harrowing period in the ’90s when women hacked their brows down to barely-there lines (I was totally guilty of this—were you?), the bushy, natural brow made a serious comeback a few years ago and has been the reigning trend ever since. Full brows can provide everything from subtle facial definition to a serious makeup statement depending on the products and method that you use. To help you decode your perfect brow look, I spoke to some of the best makeup artists in the beauty business to find out the products that they use—both on themselves and at work. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the very best pomades, powders, pencils and gels that will give you the brows that you’ve always dreamed of (and help ...see the slideshow here

This Holiday Kids’ Table Will Make You Never Want to Grow Up

the cutest holiday kids' table!

The children’s table is always a fun place to spend a holiday meal — a safe haven from the boring formalities of the adult dining room. (My cousin and I like to joke that we are “forever kids” because we still haven’t given up our seats at the super casual table in my aunt’s kitchen.) This year I thought it would be fun to create a whimsical children’s table where any kid would be excited to sit. I took a little inspiration from the classic children’s books, The Chronicles of Narnia, and dreamed up a magical winter wonderland with a few woodsy touches. Read on to discover how I created this snowy table setting and see how much Phoebe and her friends loved sitting there! photographed by kristen kilpatrick   ...see the slideshow here

Burrata Toasts with Caramelized Walnuts and Mint-Pomegranate Pesto

burrata toast with walnuts, figs, and pomegranate seeds

I’m making it official: these toasts are being crowned my Appetizer of Holiday 2017. Each year, it always happens that I end up obsessing over one perfect snack-y bite, then serve it every excuse I can find throughout the season. We’re talking the Thanksgiving feast, holiday dinner party we always host for friends — plus potlucks, happy hours and family chats over glasses of wine in between. Last year, it was sweet potato crostinis, and this year it’s without a doubt these burrata toasts with caramelized walnuts and mint-pomegranate pesto. Not only are they addictively delicious, they’re Christmas colors, too! For the next post in our series with California Walnuts, I’m sharing the recipe for caramelized walnuts I’ve been making for years, and they happen to be the perfect sweet and crunchy topping for these toasts. Read on, and I’d love to hear what appetizers you guys are making this holiday season ...see the slideshow here

Step Inside Our New Studio Kitchen

Camille Styles New Studio Kitchen

I know, I know: we’re releasing the room reveals of our #CSBungalow painfully slow, from the butler’s pantry to the craft room to the bathroom it’s been a one-by-one tour as we put the finishing touches on each space. And while I’m dying to share every last inch with you guys (soon!), today’s post checks off a big box since it’s one of my favorite spots in the entire studio – and probably the area that our team spent the most time deliberating over. When we first laid hands on our 100-year-old bungalow, there was not a kitchen in sight. One corner of the house had an old sink and a pot-bellied stove (not kidding), and we knew that we had some major work ahead of us in order to achieve the spacious, light-filled kitchen of our dreams. Keep scrolling for the before shots and the full reveal, along with the talented people and ...see the slideshow here
