Back to the Beach

“There’s not much better than a baby on a beach, is there?” It was one of those honest observations you make when you’re entirely comfortable with your significant other. We were lying underneath a palapa in Mexico, watching a mother lead her child along the shore. The toddler was experiencing the sea for the first time — the sand, the shells, the moving tide. After that, it became a catchphrase between us – any time we were feeling totally relaxed and content, we were “as happy as a baby on a beach”. We went back to the beach over and over during that year, and sometimes I would let myself imagine that we lived there. We’d have a little house with white washed walls and an open kitchen.
