5 Signs You’re a Workaholic

are you a workaholic?

Even though “workaholism” has been a buzzword for years, the digital world really adds a whole new layer to the concept. With emails at our fingertips, company laptops in our homes, and deadlines looming, why not work a few minutes at night or on the weekend to get ahead? If you followed that logic, you’re not alone. According to a very scary report, women work 39 days a year more than men. Does that mean we’re falling victim to becoming workaholics at a higher rate than men. Like many of you, I take pride in my work and get a sense of fulfillment, even joy, from working hard and staying busy. I don’t share this to brag. Quite the opposite. I tell you this because the more I read about workaholics for this article, the more I started to identify as one. That tendency isn’t good for any of us. A ...see the slideshow here

The Healthy Salad You Need To Make ASAP

healthy salmon lentil salad

I can’t take full credit for this recipe — it was inspired by an amazing dish I tried at a neighborhood cafĂ© here in Austin called Epicerie. But I can say that I’ve devised an interpretation of the restaurant’s salad that truly couldn’t be easier. Got a knife? How about an oven? Great. That’s just about all you’ll need. The dressing calls for two (just two!) ingredients. The salmon can be made to perfection in minutes flat. And if the thought of cooking lentils is a total turn-off, think again. I grabbed mine already made from the salad bar at Whole Foods. You’ve got to admit, it really doesn’t get easier than that. Once you’ve prepped your ingredients, all there’s left to really do is assemble. And you can be as quick and messy with that as you like, because unlike me, you probably won’t have to have your salad photographed. ...read the rest of the story here

20 Best Fireplace Designs

When I was given the seasonal assignment to round up the 10 best fireplaces, I panicked for a moment (as I do with all last minute stories). Then I remembered that I’m obsessed with fireplaces, and literally have hundreds saved on my pinterest boards. (ha!) So the 10 best fireplaces quickly became the 20. Even though I live in summer-all-year Austin, the first thing I did when I bought my condo was to design and build a large fireplace for the living room. Nothing gives a room a friendly center of energy quite like a fireplace does. I’m also a fan of them in unexpected places like kitchens and bathrooms as well. Modern, rustic, gothic, southwest, victorian, mid-century, every style you can think of. I love them all. Scroll through and let me know: which style is your favorite? all images sourced via jenn rose smith’s pinterest boards ...see the slideshow here

Splurge Hair Tools that are Totally Worth It

the Dyson supersonic and so much more...

Call me superficial, but I always look forward to that first cool, crisp day in the fall where I can actually spend a little time styling my hair and actually enjoy the results of my handiwork throughout the day—rather than having my locks descend into a frizzy mess as they do all. Summer. Long. Something related that I need to address this year? Upgrading my styling tools. I have a tendency (with both beauty and technology—looking at you, cracked, ancient iPhone 6) to hold on and use items that have definitely already passed their prime, but now I’m determined to invest in quality styling tools that will really go the distance. Of course, if you have an old-faithful curling iron that works perfectly well, I’m not saying that you have to toss it. But, if you are similarly in the position of needing (or wanting!) to upgrade your styling tools, ...see the slideshow here

10 Ways to Fight Insomnia Naturally

Tips from Dr. Preeti Devnani of the Sleep Disorder Clinic.

Sleep is a subject we talk about constantly in the office, yet we’ve never really addressed it here on the blog. This odd phenomenon is mirrored by our society at large: while sleep is obviously one of the foremost pillars of wellness, we tend to brush past the subject entirely. That’s why Dr. Preeti Devnani MD has dedicated her career to understanding and managing sleep disorders, as well as raising what she calls “Sleep Awareness” among the medical community and general public. “The science of sleep is extremely fascinating, and it’s clearly evident that we are still in the nascent phase of learning much about the various physiological aspects and the impact of sleep disorders on general health,” says Dr. Devnani. “Ideally a person must sleep from sunset to sunrise, optimizing the cumulative effect on the homeostatic and circadian drive for ideal physiology. In the modern era, we’re burning the ...see the slideshow here

How to Find Your Original Voice

In 1972, social psychologist Irving Janis coined the term “groupthink”. He wanted to give a name to something he saw happening when people made decisions as groups. What he is observed was that the desire for harmony within the group caused people to oftentimes forgo their own creativity. If Janis were still here today, he’d see his own theory come to life on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. As creative millennials it seems like the more we share online, the more alike we become. Are we all headed towards the same sharp point? Will we all end up sitting on one giant diamond flokati rug, sipping cappuccinos and styling overhead shots of rose gold accessories? As a longtime creative and working member of the blogosphere, I say no. We don’t have to end up there. Artists have struggled with groupthink for years before it had a name, and there are ...see the slideshow here
