The Best Blushes for Glowing Winter Skin

Gray skies, harsh winds, slushy streets…no offense, winter, but you ain’t the prettiest season there is. Once we get to January, I start to feel like I’ve lost my luster entirely. (Hey, a girl can only endure so many nights that start at 4:30 pm before she starts to forget what a summer breeze feels like.) One’s instinct might be to layer on the bronzer and self-tanner in search of a bit of that long-lost summery color, but I always feel that trying to create a faux tan in the dead of winter is a losing game. My solution? Blush. Blush has always been one of my favorite product categories of all time. I mean, who can resist pretty powders, gels and creams in poppy shades of pink, red and coral? The tulips may not be out for a good few months, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t deck ...see the slideshow here

Weekend Notes

Hope y’all are having a great weekend so far! We hosted a couples’ baby shower for some good friends at our house last night, and it was so fun celebrating their soon-to-arrive bundle who will be just 6 weeks older than ours. Today will be whipping the house back into shape, doing a massive grocery shop (you know when your fridge is literally empty? that’s mine right now), and a trip to the park with Phoebe to soak up some of this unexpected January sunshine. We have some posts come up this week that I’m really excited about — one of my favorite Entertaining With’s ever, a new dessert series just in time for V-day, and a step-by-step on deep cleaning your kitchen! — but for now, enjoy a few of my favorite links from around the web last week! xo The 5 stages of waking up on a Monday ...read the rest of the story here

The secret to glossy hair

You know that girl — the one in your facebook feed with impossibly good hair. In EVERY photo. She automatically seems more confident, more successful, and more put-together, because our hair has such a big impact on our overall appearance. Thick, shiny, richly hued hair is a symbol of youth and health, so there’s no simpler way to brighten up your look than doing a quick restorative treatment for your tresses. We met up with Rory McNeill, award-winning colorist and proprietor of ROAR Salon, to learn about his favorite treatment for adding shine and color to dull hair. The “rich gloss” hair treatment can be performed in 30 minutes by a professional colorist, with benefits lasting from 4-6 weeks. “Glossing the hair deposits color without lifting, which smooths the cuticle bringing softness and shine. It’s a fast, low committal change,” explains Rory. “Because the color doesn’t penetrate deep into the ...read the rest of the story here

Dyed in the Wool

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, dyed-in-the-wool is an adjective meaning “having opinions that are very strong and do not change.” While I wouldn’t say I’m dyed-in-the-wool when it comes to politics, I’ve certainly got some strong notions when it comes to aesthetics. Ideas like: wood is better than plastic. Cream looks more expensive than white. Candlelight is the most flattering light. And tweed is forever. With temperatures in the thirties and lower this week in Austin (brrr!) I’m very much appreciating my Dale of Norway sweater, made by the hundred year old Norwegian company from 100% wool. I suppose you could say I’m getting pretty set in my ways when it comes to winter fashion in general. Black hunter boots, a chic camel coat, pearl studs and a good wool sweater… just don’t ever try to tell me anything different. image sources {row one} igor mamantov, spletnik, john balsom for ...read the rest of the story here

Best Teeth Whitening Products

The new year is a perfect time for fresh starts — and, since my self-pampering routine took a major hit amidst the craziness of December, I’m starting off the year with some beauty resolutions to go alongside my financial/spiritual/self-betterment goals. Besides for the obvious intentions of keeping my eyebrows plucked, my nails chip-free (bare nails are way better than chipped polish, in my opinion), and finally getting around to booking that hair color appointment, I’m resolving this year to take better care of my smile. Like having perfectly groomed brows and healthy skin, a bright smile is a feature that helps one to look our best, regardless of whether or not we have any makeup on (always a win in my book). So, in honor of fresh starts and happy smiles, I rounded up a variety of teeth-whitening products that will (hopefully) turn our chompers dazzling for 2015. Who’s with ...see the slideshow here

In a perfect world, we’d have time for a blow-out after every spin class but in reality… sometimes there’s a happy hour we just have to get to. Since our schedules aren’t slowing down any time soon, we’ve enlisted beauty expert Maritza Buelvas to help us figure out a quick post-work out hair solution. 13 ways to up your financial game

featured image from the sartorialist When we reconvened in the office for the new year, we realized that almost everyone on our team had some sort of financial resolution: to start saving, to start investing, or to simply start paying more attention to our monthly spending. We decided to look for an expert — someone who could answer our collective questions about personal finance and give us a few new ideas for 2015. We didn’t have to look far to find Camille Gaines, Austin-based financial consultant and founder of Financial Woman, a company whose purpose is to educate and empower women’s financial lives. “The ethos of women leaving the room when money was discussed is still present based on generational messages,” explained Camille. “While this is shifting (especially with the Millennials) changing this ethos drives me. I want to end the eye shift to only the men in the conversation ...see the slideshow here

What’s On Hand :: Sweet Paul

Paul Lowe, aka Sweet Paul, is certainly living the sweet life. He was born in Oslo, Norway and raised by his Auntie Gunnvor (Great Aunt) and Mormor (grandmother) who nurtured his love of cooking and crafting at an early age. With their impeccable tastes, but “not always so perfect cakes”, they also instilled the mantra that “fullkommenhet er kjedelig” or “perfection is boring.” After moving to New York City and working as a highly sought after stylist, Paul launched the Sweet Paul blog to share his love of stylish, yet attainable food, crafts and lifestyle with his clients. This little blog became an online phenomenon and served as the beginning for his much loved magazine of the same name. Today, Sweet Paul is followed by millions online, and the print quarterly, Sweet Paul Magazine, is sold nationwide in Anthropologie and other specialty stores. Last year Paul celebrated the publication of ...read the rest of the story here

CS Team Resolutions

featured image via refinery 29 Our team resolutions post from last year was a huge hit, with both our readers and us. What we found is that through defining and openly sharing our goals with each other, we became more accountable to see them through. (We also took inspiration from each others’ resolutions, and added a few more ideas to our individual goals.) We’re back again this January with a new set of resolutions for 2015. This year our team wants to travel, cook, put our devices down and get in the moment… what personal goals would you like to add to our collective list? ...see the slideshow here
