8 Ways to Worry Less

The more conversations I have with my girlfriends, the more I realize: women are natural worriers. We worry about little things (I woke up at 2am last night with my mind racing about the wood floors we’re getting installed!) and the big things (families, health, job security… the list goes on.) However unpleasant it might feel at the time, worry’s not all bad. At its best, worry can be the impetus we need to take positive actions and ensure we’re doing what needs to be done. For example, if we’re worried about our financial future, it can inspire us to focus on putting aside a little savings each month. Since worry is something none of us will ever fully escape, I thought it was worth consulting the experts to find out how we can use it to our advantage: by letting it spur us on to become our best selves, ...see the slideshow here

A Citrus Baby Shower

photographed by mia baxter If I had to describe Julia Lake in one phrase it would be this: “Not afraid to be fabulous.” As the renowned event designer behind Julia Lake Parties!, Julia is one of those rare people who just instinctively knows how to turn a get-together into a magical, once-in-a-lifetime event. When Michael and I visited Julia and her husband Chris in Napa back in August, we experienced an unforgettable weekend full of surprises (including karaoke and a 6.0 earthquake!). But the best discovery of all was learning that Chris and Julia were expecting a child this spring. We knew straight away that we wanted full coverage of the shower, which would inevitably be something special. With the help of her dear friend Nicole Cari (who also happens to be the marketing maven behind the impossibly cool clothing line, Band of Outsiders) Julia hosted a small group of ...see the slideshow here

Cassandra and Erin

photographed by belathée Remember that pair back in high school who were somehow on the yearbook staff, honor roll, and varsity team all at once? Well, they’re probably rocking pretty great jobs by now. They might be human rights lawyers, magazine editors, or high powered attorneys. Or maybe they even grew up to become big-time bloggers with massive followings. That’s certainly the case for Cassandra LaValle of coco+kelley and Erin Heimstra of Apartment 34, whose friendship dates back to seventh grade. “We’ve been pretty much inseparable ever since,” gushes Erin about her bestie and fellow blogger Cassandra. Who knew that a friendship that started in a junior high clique could last through the competitive days of high school, the soul-searching college years, and beyond into their very successful careers as bloggers and creatives. We met up with Erin and Cassandra on a cold day in Seattle to learn more about ...see the slideshow here

How to Fake It ‘Till You Make It

I’ll come out and say it, I’m not crazy about my kitchen. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, the cabinets aren’t dated and the countertops aren’t offensive. It’s not quite worth the time and resources to renovate, but it’s just not what I would have chosen. So what do you do when you don’t have the open shelving marble and subway tile kitchen of your dreams? I say fake it til you make it. Find a space in your kitchen to display the pretty ceramic cups and bowls that you would if you did have open shelving. In this photo a floating shelf was added below traditional cabinets, and in the past, I’ve faked it by displaying my dinnerware and pretty food canisters on a shelving unit. If you long for Carrara marble countertops, there are plenty of ways to bring those gorgeous white and gray veins into your ...read the rest of the story here

The Bold Print Kimono

photographed by jessica attie When we selected The Weston Dress by Isabel Marant Étoile for this installment of Double Take, we all agreed that the piece was fantastic — the fun bell sleeves, graphic print, and kimono shape make this mini dress one to covet. But how, we wondered, could such a bold statement dress look very different on two people? Enter the experts: Stephanie Gawlik and Katie Caplener, both employees of By George, the iconic Austin boutique where we found the dress. Needless to say, they more than dispelled our fears. “I always try to look at things as more than what they were intended to be,” says Katie, who styled the dress as a top with wide legged trousers from The Row. “And my approach to styling was the dress was giving it that ‘boho’ edge,” says Stephanie, who rocked a leather backpack and black felt hat with ...see the slideshow here

The Fake Out Haircut

Is it just us, or does it seem like everyone is going shorter with their hair right now? From Lauren Conrad to Natalie Portman, we’re seeing the “lob” look fresh and modern on so many different faces. If you’re itching to try out this look yourself but freeze up every time you see a pair of scissors, we’ve got your perfect commitment-phobe solution. We met up with Erica Rae, senior stylist at ROAR Salon, to learn her technique for creating a faux lob. “I’ve tried talking myself into cutting my hair off for years now,” she confesses. “And the thoughts are usually brought on by seeing a celebrity go from long to short.” While some people use extensions to reverse a cut they don’t want to keep, most of us will be living with the decision for a while. Erica developed this technique to allow long-haired clients to try out ...read the rest of the story here

Best Face Masks

Ever since I was a child, I’ve associated face masks with a sort of feminine mystique. Perhaps because it’s a cliché in movies for a woman to “primp” or “unwind” with green goo smeared on her face, I always thought that taking a few minutes to relax while some magical potion works its wonders on your mug was kind of the ultimate in grown-up indulgence. And, if I’m being honest with myself, not much has changed. I still get that thrill of scooping out the product and applying it to my skin thickly and liberally, of taking a few moments to relax, and of getting a feeling (however brief) that I’ve done something really good for my skin, and for my stress levels. Hey, maybe it’s a cliché for a reason — I’m guessing that both you and your skin could use some TLC right about now, and what better ...see the slideshow here

DIY Key to My Heart

A few months ago I came across a great image on Pinterest — a styled shot of tasseled hotel keys from The Grand Budapest Hotel. I stumbled happily down a rabbit hole that ended at the portfolio site of Annie Atkins, the incredible designer hired by Wes Anderson to create the graphic elements for the film. Inspired by her whimsical tasseled keys, we decided to create our own fictitious fobs for this year’s free Valentine’s Day printable. Read below for everything you’ll need to create this simple “Key to My Heart” DIY valentine: SUPPLIES: Pink, red, or white tassels Vintage Keys Scissors Small hole punch Home printer White or cream card stock paper Our free downloadable template DIRECTIONS: Download our free printable template Print the file on to card stock paper Carefully cut out the key fobs, being sure to cut just to the outside of the ink (not on ...read the rest of the story here

Bardot Inspired Hair

Hair and concept by Maritza Buelvas | photography by Cassandra Eldridge | makeup by Brenda Arelano | modeling by Willow Star When we think of the most iconic names in hair history (think “Farrah”, “Jen”, “Twiggy”) there’s one that we just keep coming back to again and again: Bardot. Parisian ingenue and darling of the French new wave cinema movement, Bridget Bardot is pretty much our all-time sexy hair icon. Her signature “bed head” bouffant was perfectly French — meaning that you can only imagine how much effort went into creating this completely “effortless” hairstyle. Fortunately for us, beauty expert Maritza Buelvas is here to reveal the secrets to recreating Bridget’s full look, and she’s got some great tips for faking “big” hair no matter what natural volume you’re working with: SUPPLIES: Medium Barrel Curling Iron Volume Hair Spray Fine Tooth Teasing Comb Hair pins (either neutral color or shiny ...read the rest of the story here
